The Hartridge Family

John Hartridge and Sarah Earle Hartridge (1749-1818) resided in the parish of St. Martin in the Field (London). Their son John Earle Hartridge (1775-1817) married Hester Hannah Williams and emigrated to Savannah, Georgia, where their children, including Charles Hartridge, were born. This line produced Walter Charlton Hartridge, Jr. whose legacy to Savannah is one which will endure. His life was devoted to preserving not only the architectural treasures of the city, but also to rescuing and preserving its documentary heritage. His knowledge of southern families was encyclopedic. His extensive collection, which includes the history of the Hartridge family of Georgia, is now preserved with the Georgia Historical Society.

The Battersby Family

William Battersby, born in Manchester, came to Savannah, Georgia in 1842 where he resided until he retired about 1868. He was one of the most successful cotton merchants in the South. In 1850, he built a handsome brick house of the Barbados type on 119 East Charlton street (below left). Its garden was noted in 1955 History of Georgia as the "oldest surviving Savannah garden retaining its original plan and planting." During the diffficult times of the Civil war, he was thrown from a buggy and partly paralized. In 1861, his cargo and vessel, Cheshire, were captured during the blockade of the port of Savannah, then libeled in the district court as prize of war (U.S. Supreme Court, The Cheshire, 70 U.S. 3 Wall. 231 231 (1865). William's brother and business partner, Joseph died arriving at Boston while attempting to recover the Consul bound for the South. The Battersby's country residence in England was Lymm Hall (below right), in Cheshire. The Hall, a moated ancient mansion, was the original seat of the Domvilles.
